"Power to the People" became one of the more popular slogans of the prior century. It is also one of the deeper rooted foundations of our Constitution.
Another saying of recent times is that the POTUS is the "Most powerful man in the world". This is something we have all, including myself, come to say without giving much thought to it.
Kings were "powerful". Dictators, like Saddam Hussein, Stalin, and Hitler, were "powerful". The President of the United States is supposed to represent the most powerful nation on Earth, yes; but he himself is not supposed to be powerful.
Power breeds arrogance. We see this in Obama's approach to those that oppose him. He directly attacks them for not agreeing with him and uses every resource he can get his hands on to turn others against those that challenge him (i.e. his mocking of the "Tax Day Tea Parties", his refusal to go on the top cable news channel on TV because he knows they will not ask him the scripted questions he insists on being asked, his alignment with special interest groups like ACORN).
Arrogance is the downfall of every one of those dictators mentioned above. Arrogance can cause leaders to under-appreciate their "subjects" (eventually causing them to revolt). It can also be a major creator of "crony-ism". Arrogance demands acceptance. That leads to empowering people "beneath" the leader/dictator to take charge of a given area of responsibility - just so the leader has "friends". We are seeing this right now with Obama's "czars". He is like a junior high school kid that just moved to a new school and is desperately trying to find approval.
Power also leads to abuse.......of power. Abuse can take many forms and can be afflicted upon people with or without intention from the giver. Abuse of power can be delivered economically, socially, religously, and of course physically. The history of the world gives us countless examples to back this up. In every case, arrogance and abuse eventually become the ruin of the man (or woman).
In order to stop the EXTREME liberal shift of this country, which is being lead by a MINORITY of our citizens who are in "powerful" positions, we need to deliver multiple defeats to this administration. Stopping ANY TYPE OF GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTHCARE is at the top of the list. COMPLETELY stopping "Cap and Trade" is a close second. Thirdly, we MUST take away some of this President's power. To do that, we have to vote out the "insider's" that are currently taking up seats in Congress (the House and the Senate).
2010 elections are going to tell us where the next decade (or more) of this country is headed. It very well could be the next turning point towards a Social Democracy if in fact government run healthcare and Cap-and-Trade become a reality between now and then. Reach out to your Congressman and stop these legislations from becoming law. Find PATRIOTS to vote for next year. Whatever you do, don't assume someone else will do the right thing and that will be enough - GET INVOLVED.
the Patriot
Great commentary, Bryan! Got to agree with you. His grab for over-reaching power is frightening - just announce this new "interrogation" "terrorism" oversight group that answers to... Congress? nope..... The people? nope.... answers only to himself. Now that's frightening, and entirely unconstitutional. The other frightening news of the day: the White House announces that by the end of the next decade our national debt will equal 3/4 of the U.S. economy. 75%??? If we go down that road, sink into that hole, we will *never* pull out. Never. We will be at the mercy of the rest of the world, the majority of which despises us. We *must* vote against this man and all the programs he wants to bankrupt us with.
